This morning we were greeted with rain and very strong winds. Just as we left our moorning it began to rain really hard and a warning to mariners was dispatched on the VHF. But since our brand new weather radar told us it was sunny (so much for fancy technology!) we decided to get under nonetheless. Initially we wanted to go through Hell Gate at slack but that would mean facing a strong oppossing current on the East River and at the Battery in NY Harbor. So instead we went through when the current was predicted at 3.5 knots. As we got underway a tug was right on our heels until we passed Rikers Island. Our speed over ground was 9.8 knots.
We dodged the ferries and other boat traffic and got to Liberty Landing by 10:30 am.
Bottlenose's crew is renting bikes to take to Manhattan where we will have lunch at the World Financial Center.
More later...
