Biking the New River Trail
This morning we ate at the Chestnut Creek Coffee shop in downtown Galax and then headed back to our cabin to prep for our bike ride along the New River. We saddled up our bikes and hooked up the doggie wagon now christened "Fin's Chariot.". We rode downstream heading North (the New River is one of the few that actually flows North) and Fin trotted along side for several miles. He ran about 5 miles a hour which is well under half our usual trail pace. But it was very relaxing and there was plenty of gorgeous landscape to view. After about 5.5 miles we thought it was time to put him in his chariot. Fortunately he willingly jumped in (anything for a treat, right!). He was quite amusing to watch as we rode along for another 2.5 miles. He seemed to be enjoying the scenery and wasn't complaining a bit about not having to walk.
We took a nice long break at Fries Junction which is the confluence of the New River and Chestnut Creek. We ran into a fair number of other people walking and biking along the trail. Everyone seemed to chuckle upon seeing Fin in his chariot.
We rode on a couple more miles and then decided to turn back so as not to push ourselves on the first ride. That turned out to be a good idea because poor Lance offered to pull the chariot on the way back -- it just so happened that this time we were heading upstream with a slight incline. Pulling 90 lbs is hard enough but upstream makes it even more of a chore.
All in we cycled 20 miles today. Now all three of us are relaxing in our warm cabin along the creek.
