As is often the case our 6 mile hike turned out to be much longer both time and distance wise. Our friends Peggy and Jamie lent us a trail guide which has come in very handy except for the description of the "slide". We took the Acadia shuttle to our trail head and started the ascent up St. Sauveur. The trail meandered through scotch pine and granite outcroppings. When we got to the top there was a gorgeous view looking down Somes Sound. As we reached the last leg of our journey we came across the slide which was a big boulder field. The boulders and the gaps in between were too big for Fin to negotiate so after some hemming and hawing we decided to turn back retracing our steps for most of the way. We came upon a parking lot and a sympathetic young couple (new foundland dog lovers, too) who drove us back to the main road to catch our shuttle. The excursion turned out to be an all day event so by the time we got back to camp we were famished! Next time we'll be sure to pack a lunch and more water!!!
But the views were well worth the effort. We also were treated to see a fleet of sailboats headed up the cove with their spinnakers in full bloom. The conditions were ideal for a race.
