Due to camera technical difficulties no photos to share for this post and that's a shame because it is lovely in Door County.
In many ways it reminds us of Cape Cod or even the coast of Maine. Lots of craggy bluffs and plenty of sailboats anchored in the small harbors.
Our home for three days was Peninsula State Park nestled between the small towns of Fish Creek and Ephraim. The park has an excellent network of trails which made for ideal Fin walks and easy rides to town for lunch and shopping. The bike trails were so busy with crazy kids flying down the hills that we felt much safer contending with the cars on the roads.
The first day it poured rain. Lance and I looked at each other and said "oh no what will we do for 3 days stuck in the RV and without Internet access!" But then the clouds parted and the weather sparkled. We took advantage of every opportunity between rain showers to make the most of our stay.
As I spoke to my mom by phone, she mentioned that the Zablers (neighbors at Loggerhead Cay on Sanibel) long ago had a house in Door County. Sure enough when cycling into Ephraim I pass Zabler Designs, an upscale jeweler, and decide to poke my head in the door. Low and behold there was Russ Zabler who I last saw 35+ years ago on Sanibel. He recounted the story of when he and my brother Roger drifted off into the Gulf of Mexico on two little sailboats. After a day of drifiting westward, the Coast Guard came to their rescue -- a story I remember vividly ! Bumping into Russ made our visit to Door County even more special.
This morning we are in Eagle River, WI which is the self proclaimed "world's snow mobiling capital". It's a convincing title when you see the enormous snow mobile derby stadium on the center of town. This stop may be the last taste of Internet connectivity as we venture into the Upper Peninsula for the next few days.
Stay tuned!
