Mougins is located halfway between Cannes and Grasse so it was an easy 15 minute trip to visit the the Fragonard factory where perfume is made. It turned out to be a surprisingly interesting museum and one worth a trip.
our tour guide explained the role of the chief perfumist who is responsible for developing the recipes for each perfume. The main instrument -- called the organ -- helps to select the "key notes" for each perfume. The top row represents the scent that is present when the perfume is first applied to the skin and lasts approximately 10 minutes. The second row represents the most important scent which is the one that interacts with each individual's skin acidity and endures throughout most of the day.
In the evening we dined in old Mougins which was equally charming as St. Paul de Vence but with fewer tourists.
To our surprise we discovered a sculpture of "Le Pouce" or in this case "Le Grand Pouce". Brigitte and Franck had introduced us to a French idiom and gesture earlier in the week. The gesture is to reveal a small portion of the thumb which signifies to "Manger sur le pouce" or "grab a quick bite to eat". While we talked a lot about "le pouce" very few of our meals were quick bites...most were relaxing and entirely satisfying three hour gastronomic experiences!
