As a firm believer in the idea that life is a constant 'balance,' it's no surprise that our good luck was to be coupled with some bad luck. There's a big tear in our sail!
At 11 am we entered Delaware Bay and the air was still but the current strong in the wrong direction. Since we were dodging a pending thunderstorm we decided to push on. MerSea's 40 hp engine pushed us through at 5 knots until the tide turned later in the afternoon when we picked up to 8 knots. But there was a nasty storm hanging along the southern shore. The wind picked up and we decided to pull the jib out to gain speed and level out the boat. Unfortunately the wind was stronger than expected and the leech of the sail wacked against the rigging and the new radar reflecter. Next a 3 foot gash appeared!
Of course Cape May is a motor boat town and not a sailboat town. There is no sail loft so that means attempting to sew the repair ourselves. So we definitely will stay for two nights as originally planned. Still 2 days ahead of schedule.
Off to the Lobster House for a good seafood meal!
