RV parks like the one we are currently staying in near Big
Pine Key reaffirm our preference for state and national parks. There are over 500 RVs packed in like
sardines on a small key along Rt. 1. As
Lance said…”I’m seeing things I never knew existed!”
MerSea 2 is among the smaller rigs in the park. You can’t imagine how massive some of these
RVs can be. One has to be at least 40
feet long and towing a 25 foot cargo trailer in which their bright red corvette,
a zodiac, a golf cart and a jet ski live.
That’s bigger than any commercial 18-wheeler you’ll ever see on 95!
A massive 40' rig plus trailer for all the toys! |
It is obvious that many of the visitors are here for an
extended visit. Most have a trailer in
which they’ve transported their lawn ornaments (yes, psychedelic colored
flamingos), even fencing so their pampered pooches have a yard away from home,
and appliances galore...chest freezers and refrigerators! Many
of the sites are illuminated so at night the place takes on a carnival like
atmosphere.
RV decorations gone wild! |
Yesterday a Jimmy Buffet look alike strummed along all
afternoon at the pool. It brought back
visions of “spring break” many, many moons ago.
Stephanie was the only one swimming laps in the pool while over 150
RV-ers sat by the side sipping buds and partaking in some sort of annual raffle
ritual.
Needless to say we were thrilled when Jane & Harry, our
friends from the sailing club, emailed this morning to invite us to camp in their driveway
on Islamorada on Monday night. That will
be a welcome respite!
On the plus side, the weather has been splendid and the water temperature just perfect. Fin has been having a blast romping along the beach. It sure beats the 1-3 feet of snow up North!
