Harbor Springs and Petoskey

Our base camp was Petosky State Park well situated along the Little Traverse Wheelway between Harbor Springs and Charlevoix.  The park is perched along beautiful dunes in the well protected cove of Little Traverse Bay.

Since it was peak season and we had not made a reservation our only option was a site in the tent campground equipped with only 20 amp sockets.  Fortunately we were a quick bicycle ride into town to a super Ace hardware.  Not only did we find a 50ft extension cord but also a replacement for my Aerolatte that had expired.  Now we could recharge our cell phones while sipping on cafe lattes!

The bike route into Petosky passes through Bayview known for one of the highest concentrations of Victorian homes dating back to the 1800's  -- a total of 430 homes are in the historical register.  What a charming spot.  Petoskey, too, was a quaint town with lots of personality.

The next morning we cycled to Harbor Springs, an enclave of summer homes for the 4th generations of Fords and Gambles (as in "Proctor and").  As we rolled into town the first thing we came upon was a dog friendly  town beach -- a perfect opportunity for Fin to burn off some energy.  Soon after our arrival we met a friendly family with a black lab.  Of course that meant instant connection so we began chatting with the Warrens.  It turns out they are friends with the Meckes who live near us on Carter's Creek!  We love these "small world" encounters.

So far this area is one of our favorite spots along our journey.  It's easy to think "it would be great to live here" until you think about the winter and all the snow!!!
