Mt. Ventoux et Les Environs

The next leg of our adventure took us south from Savoie through the Drome and into the northern part of Provence.  We drove south past Grenoble and up into the mountains and through the tiniest tunnels and passes.

As we passed through the last tunnel we entered the Drome which marked a major climate change.  As we descended down the twisting road the temperature warmed up, the pitches of the rooves became less steep and the flora changed from alpine trees to olive groves and lavender fields.

Ultimately we were headed to Mt. Ventoux which is technically still part of the Alps but rises alone in northern Provence.  Venteux in French means windy which is  appropriate as this lonely mountain experiences 240 days of winds averaging 56 mph or more!  It also is known for being a major climb on the Tour de France as cyclists ride to the top of the 6,273 ft mountain.
