Day 13 - Mile 2,985: Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon and Ketchum

Waking up at the crack of dawn we got underway by 7 am.  Our early morning departures have turned out to be ideal -- there are few if any other travelers on the road and the light and fog are spectacular.  We also caught a glimpse of an enormous bison as we traveled through Yellowstone Park.

Later in the day we drove on to Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho.  The geology dates back 15,000 years but just 2,000 years ago there was a major eruption and one can witness the massive lava flow.  This park offers a landscape like none other in the continental US.

Initially we planned to stay at the park.  It would have been like living in the Flintstone Era as the campgrounds were right on top of the lava fields.  But the Idaho sun was burning hard and the camp offered no electrical hook-ups so in the interest of our black prince Mr. Fin, we opted to drive on.  Finally we made it to Ketchum, ID just outside Sun Valley.  Our campsite is a stone through away from the bike trail so our plan is to stay a couple of days and explore on just two wheels.
