Day 21 - Mile 4,056: the Pacific Ocean

Twenty days and four thousand miles later we finally reach the Pacific Ocean -- yahoo!

Happiest of all was Fin who got to frolic on the beach and play in waves.  Thanks to Oregon law all the beaches are publicly owned and dogs are allowed to swim unleashed in the surf.

As Lance likes to say, our travels have averaged roughly 200 miles a day.  On a single day that doesn't seem like a lot but after 21 days it sure does.  At this point we are happy that our pace will slow slightly as we make our way down the Oregon and Northern California coast over the next 10 days.

Today's stop is at Fort Stevens which is the last stop on Lewis and Clark's expedition.  This is where the Corps of Discovery established a fort marking its arrival at the Pacific.  This fort remained in use through the Civil War and through World War II at which point it was decommissioned and turned into a park.

The wreck of the Peter Iredale reminds all of how treacherous the Columbia coast is.  In 1906 this 247-foot steel framed sailing ship was washed onto the coast in a nasty storm.  It has slowly eroded over the last 109 years.
