Day 34 - Mile 5,374: The Loneliest Road

The route from beautiful Lake Tahoe descended quickly into the high desert near Carson City, NV.  Fortunately there was a Trader Joe's right off the main road.  We were like kids in a candy store stocking up on prepared goodies.  Given that we were about to embark on a journey across "The Loneliest Road" it made perfect sense to stock up our food and beverage supply.

Route 50 between Fallon and Ely, NV is dubbed the loneliest road in America in part because the landscape is so barren and because there are very few towns/gas stations along the way.

The landscape was surprising...it was much more mountainous than expected.  In fact, we went through 15 mountain passes some of which were as high as 7,200 feet.

After a long day of driving, we found a perfect spot at Cave Lake state park and were treated to cool temperatures and a beautiful sunset.
