Onward to Chilhowie and a Quick Return to Abingdon

On Thursday morning the weather had changed. It was cold and rainy. So we decided to venture down the mountain and make our way towards Chilhowie where we had a 7 pm dinner reservation.

We took back roads so we got to see real Appalachia. Driving through Clinchco gave us a good feel for what a coal mining town is like in this day and age. Lots of hard working folks barely making ends meet. It makes you not only appreciate but think twice about all the energy we consume in our daily lives and the toll it takes on people to make that possible.

After arriving in Chilhowie and scouting out the hotels, we made a rapid decision to return to the Inn on Town Creek back in Abingdon which was 17 miles south. There were not many good options in Chilhowie...at least none that accepted pets as overnight guests.

Fin was happy to return to the Inn because the resident golden retriever was back from a visit to Charleston, SC. He fell in love with her and spent the afternoon romping around in the backyard. So much the better because we would be out for a late evening at the Town House restaurant...an experience that deserves a its own posting.
