Well...as usual my belief in "balance" proved true. Given that we had such a great trip so far, no doubt there had to be a downside...and we found it in Floyd. We were so excited about spending two days in Floyd and going to the Floyd Country Store for bluegrass on Friday night and more music on Saturday. But it just wasn't meant to be.
As we arrived at our intended B&B -- Miracle Farm B&B Spa and Resort -- for the next two nights, we scratched our heads and wondered if we were at the right spot. There was no signage on the main road nor at the entrance. We pulled into a gravel road and up a step hill to arrive at a rather shabby brown house hidden behind overgrown vegetation. The entire place looked run down and definitely was NOT a "Spa & Resort".
On the front door the sign said if no one responds to the door bell, use the walkie talkie...well there was no walkie talkie...their suggested third option was was to "yodel." But no one was home. Lance was not impressed with the B&B and even thought it was creepy. He did not want to stay, but I suggested we drive into Floyd to check out the Country Store and then return later in the afternoon.
So we drove to Floyd which is a cute town. We visited the Country Store and got very excited about the upcoming music event that evening. After a tour of the town, we drove back to the B&B.
As we drove to the B&B I revisited the website and became increasingly convinced that we were experiencing "false advertising." This place was NOT a Spa or a Resort. When we returned to the B&B I, too, experienced the same creepy feeling that Lance had. Especially after talking with the owner and hearing him justify that it was proper calling the place a "spa" because they have a yoga and pilates class. What rubbish!!! My take on the situation was that the owners were a couple of crunchy granola types who were on their own planet. Lance believes the situation was more sinister and that we were being intentionally ripped off.
The outcome was that we simply could not stay there...it just wasn't what the website built it up to be. So out of principle we left and our only option was to drive home in the wet, cold weather. We finally got back to the comforts of home at 10 pm.
It was too bad to end the trip on this note because we truly had a wonderful trip and thoroughly enjoyed our discovery of SW Virginia. The landscape, the music and the people were all welcoming. We'll be back again...but just not to that last B&B!
