Mile 2,894: Verona Beach, Oneida, NY

As we departed the Adirondacks we left the mountains behind and entered the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes.  The countryside looked so gentle as we zoomed along small roads.  To our surprise the roadsides were dotted with plenty of dining options.  We stumbled upon "The Soda Fountain" in Remsen, NY.  It was a recreated 1950s "Fonzi" styled diner.   Lance enjoyed a tri-colored sausage and pepper sub. Needless to say we were sated for the rest of the afternoon!

A brief attempt at culture was unsuccessful.  We had read about the Oneida Community Ltd. which is the current Oneida silverware manufacturer.  It started out as a utopian socialist community under the direction of a fellow named Noyes.  They did not believe in ownership of material possessions nor even the concept of martial units.  They lived as one supposed happy family in a monstrous 93,000 sq ft complex.  The building has plenty of character but unfortunately we could not find a way to access the facility so after a brief peek we carried on towards Verona Beach State Park.

Verona Beach is another gem of a NY state park.  It is perched on the eastern edge of Oneida Lake so it is well situated for stunning sunsets.  It also has a mile long walkway on the lakeshore with designated swimming areas.  The main swimming area projects into the lake about 100 yards and is still no deeper than waist level.

Our site had a direct view on to the lake.  It was a beautiful spot and hard to beat for only $20/night!
