Today was the shortest trip yet...only 21 miles west to Green Lakes State Park. The park flanks a small portion of the 365 mile long Erie Canal System that was constructed starting in the early 1800s. The canal ran from Albany to Buffalo and connected the Great Lakes to the Hudson River facilitating commercial traffic between the mid-west and New York City.
By the turn of the century, like other canal systems, it became obsolete as commercial traffic migrated to railways and then to the interstate highway system.
In the mid 1990s, New York state undertook a preservation project to turn the old canal into a recreational destination. It is now possible to bike the entire trail length.
After setting up MerSea2 at our site, Stephanie hopped on her bike to ride a small portion of the trail just east of Syracuse. It looks just like the C&O Canal!
