Alone with the Devil

As we left Marietta mid-day we thought of hoping on the highway and heading home to Church Prong, but then we said …”naahhhh, let’s keep going!”   So we picked a route north heading into the southern Appalachians.  We expected the area to be sparse but it was filled with weekend homes on the mountainsides and along numerous lakes.  Our route took us along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway.

Lake Jacossee in Devil's Fork State Park

Our National Geographic guide on State Parks came through again with the suggestion of Devil’s Fork State Park.  The park is tucked in the corner of South Carolina along the Georgia and North Carolina borders in the southern portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  In the early 70s, the valley was flooded to create Lake Jocasse, a 7,565-acre reservoir with a 75 mile shoreline.  The reservoir feeds a hydroelectric dam owned by Duke Power Company.

There’s no one in the park -- we’re the only ones in the campground!  Let’s hope the bears don’t plan on a slumber party at our campsite.  Magically our our wifi hot spot is working so we can catch up on blog postings.
