Swimming with the Manatees

Buuuurr.... it's cold!   A cold snap came in over night with temperatures dropping to below freezing.  We are along the shores of the Crystal River, about an hour north of Tampa.  There are 30 hots springs in the immediate vicinity.  The 72 degree temperature is ideal for the West Indies Manatee which tends to be a major tourist draw for the local economy.  We are lined up for a kayak tour this afternoon and then tomorrow morning are taking a 3-4 hour snorkeling excursion to swim with the manatees.  Given the freezing temperatures it's hard to imagine being in the mood to don a bathing suit and jump in the water!

One of the lessons learned from this trip is that it is impossible to stay at a state park without advance reservations -- in some cases that means planning 11 months ahead.  For that reason we modified our "foot loose" approach and locked into reservations at several state parks along the West Coast.  That will take us up to the St. Joseph's  Peninsula over the course of the next week.  If we like what we see (and if the weather is agreeable), then we'll continue to head West out through the Panhandle towards Alabama and Mississippi.
