The first stop in our journey led us to Douthat State Park nestled
along the VA-WVA border east of Staunton.
Our strategy of exiting the Northern Neck during peak heat and humidity
was validated as the climate improved with the altitude. However, we were having difficulty mentally
adjusting to the campsite mindset having been treated to Dom Perignon and Chateau
d’Yquem the night before – clearly now we were in Budweiser territory!
Douthat is lined with miles and miles of trails. We opted for the trail around the lake which
made for an ideal mid-morning hike.
Then
we got underway for what we thought would be a short trip to our next
destination.
